Casting Call: Jack Reacher

May 22nd, 2008

Having just plowed my way through the most recent entry, (“Bad Luck and Trouble”) in the always exciting, addictive and best-selling Jack Reacher thriller series by Lee Child, I found myself yet again perplexed why Hollywood – buying book rights without thought lately – hasn’t gotten around to adapting any of the novels. After all, the series is perfect fodder for an exciting film franchise, not only because all the novels are completely engrossing and have a great central character, but also because they’re all stand-alone adventures. So even if Hollywood isn’t there yet, I thought I might do some of their work for them in advance, and throw in some suggestions for people who could star as the stoic hero.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson
Though I think his military type role in DOOM kind of proves he can’t do this kind of part (though that may have been more the fault of the script), and he seems too interested in being a goof-ball these days, I don’t think there’s any denying physically he could play the character quite well.

Bruce Willis
The reason I suggest Willis is not only because of his physical build/appearance, or his established acting chops, but also because we know he can do this character-type (see DIE HARD, TEARS OF THE SUN). That may be the problem though. It’s a role so closely associated with Willis (or at least universally acknowledged as his brand of action) that it would probably end up giving us the sense of “been there, done that,” which might very well kill any potential franchise right there.

Dominic Purcell
Dude isn’t a great actor necessarily, and doesn’t always have the best choices in films, but just watch any scene of “Prison Break” with him in it, and you’ll see he’s a pretty dead physical ringer for Jack Reacher. Also, even though he’s thirty-eight, there’s a certain world-weariness etched into his face and eyes that would also make him ideal for the part. Just too bad he doesn’t have the emotional range that should go along with that.

Vin Diesel
Aside from needing to resurrect his career, Diesel – like Reacher – has the ability to be gruff, but sensitive. He also has the physical look down pat. The only problems are that he’s a bit young to be playing Reacher, and as much I as enjoy the guy, I’m not sure he’s a good enough actor to pull it off. What also doesn’t help is that I feel like there’s always a constant ironic, self-aware glint in his eye, even when he’s being serious. It just never feels like he’s fully there in his roles. Also I think his voice sounds too much like rocks grinding against each other.

Jason Statham
Okay, yes, he clearly doesn’t have the bulky build for the role, but I think he’s got everything else down. In his face alone I feel I can see everything Jack Reacher is. I’m also a big fan of Statham, and think he has the potential to be one of the next great mega-action stars if people would finally come to their senses and check out his films in bigger numbers. Becoming Jack Reacher might just do that for him. I think he’d be good especially for the role because he’s a great physical actor (check out his work in THE TRANSPORTER), but he’s also an underrated dramatic actor, both of which would be ideal for portraying someone who is a physically dominating force, but also something of a lost soul.

Ray Stevenson
Personally, I think this would be my number one choice for Reacher. Stevenson has proved he can act (“Rome”), and that he can pull off a military part (THE OUTPOST). He’s got the body structure for the role, and frankly ever since I thought of him for this, I can’t help but read any Jack Reacher novel now and imagine him as the character. His face has experience just etched into it. He’s old enough, and with that his eyes perfectly reflect the world experience and the inherent sadness of someone like Reacher.

TJ Hooker Says:

I think “The Rock” would be the perfect choice. He is not only well build but got a dry sense of humour as well.

Chris Says:

Having read all the Jack Reacher books - I agree that Ray Stevenson is certainly exactly as I pictured the character. My second choice would be Vin Diesel - after seeing him in Riddick where he portrayed exactly the characteristics of Reacher albeit in a fantasy scenario. That ’slow to wind-up and yet action at top speed when its needed’. Maybe Ray Stevenson could pickup from Vin Diesel/Riddick as he still looks the part of Reacher.

Brian B Says:

For me, I’ve always seen Josh Holloway (Sawyer) from ‘Lost’ as Reacher.

amanda Says:

I love Kevin Durand for the part! He was Keamy on LOST, totally amazing, he would be the PERFECT Reacher!

Melissa Says:

I agree with amanda! Kevin Durand would be the perfect Reacher!
He is who I picture when I read the books.

Charles Says:

So far…of those suggested…Ray Stevenson is the best embodiment of how Jack Reacher is described. He’s only 1″ too short (Reacher is 6′ 5″, Stevenson is 6′ 4″; the Rock is 6′ 3″ and too swarthy looking) The Rock is not “All-American” looking enough. Check out the official Jack Reacher/Lee Child site: http://www.leechild.com/reacher.php

Charles Says:

Height, when talking about Reacher, is VERY important. That formidable stature is CRUCIAL. The following actors could NOT portray Jack Reacher for the following reasons:
Vin Diesel–too short, too young.
Bruce Willis–too short, not in good enough shape.
Kevin Durand–too young.
Josh Holloway–too young/too “pretty boy”, too short.
Jason Statham–too short; too British.
Dominic Purcell–too short, too young.
So far, from my own research, only Ray Stevenson and Dwayne Johnson (the Rock) even come close.

scott Says:

i have read trip wire and i think the perfect actor for jack reacher would be eric bana! 6ft 3, dark brown hair, in shape when he needs to be…
what do you think?

Diane Says:

Yes! Eric Bana - appealing to both men & women, captivating on screen, depth of character, strong, silent, body for it….he’d be perfect.

Charles Says:

I like Eric Bana…but not for the Jack Reacher role. I’ve always pictured Jack to have light-colored hair, and blue eyes. That’s not to say it HAS to be that way. But Eric Bana is missing something. His stature is not quite…STOUT enough. Reread the website description of Jack, and then take another look at Ray Stevenson. The only thing he appears to be lacking (which most do) is that full 6′ 5″ height; pretty tough to acquire in Hollywood. John Travolta (6′6″) and Vince Vaugh (6′5″) make the height, but can’t convey everything else.

Aside from him being perhaps a bit too young for the role, I actually think Kevin Durand isn’t a bad choice, though I’d need to see some more of his dramatic chops.

Eric Bana isn’t a bad choice either, though I do agree with Charles that he is missing something. Maybe it is stoutness.

That being said, I’m not sure I find height issues quite as disqualifying as you do Charles. After all, it’s Hollywood. It’s pretty easy to make someone seem taller on camera.

Lori Says:

I have read all the reacher novels this year and have fallen in love with the character. Ever since I heard the books have been optioned, I have been racking my brain trying to picture someone in the role. I read that Reacher might be better off left on paper and I was beginning to agree. However, I ran across pictures of Ray Stevenson today and now I can’t get him out of my head as Reacher!!! I just have to edit his accent. Hopefully Reacher will come to life on screen!!!

Charles Says:

The REELaddict makes a good point about the height not being TOO important. HOWEVER, a guy that’s 5′ 81/2″ (Jason Statham) or merely 6′ 0″ could NOT pull it off, no matter what the camera crew can manage. I assert Reacher MUST be portrayed by someone who’s AT LEAST 6′ 3″, and have the stout stature (Lee Child’s site describes Reacher as having a 50″ chest). Actors can learn–or unlearn–accents.

Charles Says:

Kevin Durand isn’t half bad. They’d have to work on his age, though. Not just appearance, but ACTING like someone Jack’s age.

libby Says:

Jack Reacher is described as being “a tree of a guy” so anyone under 6′ would not be able to carry it off. MY choice is Jeff Chase. He is HUGE!!! Take a look at his photos on imdb and tell me that he doesn’t just scream that he is Jack Reacher. (It’s only my opinion though.)

Charles Says:

I looked at Jeff Chase, and LIbby is right: he’s HUGE. Maybe too huge (He’s 6′ 8″ or 9″, I believe). He also seems to lack a certain quality in his face that I’ve always envisioned for Jack. I’m sorry, but so far, with the size, complexion, eyes, etc, Ray Stevenson is still my top choice. There’s picture of Jeff Chase with The Rock, and Chase is a good 6″ taller than Dwayne, and The Rock is 6′ 3″!!

BILLY Says:

You need someone who has a menacing stare and a child disarming grin for the ladies. Tom Selleck is too old, but would have been good in his day.

Good big guys are tough to find. Don’t know if he has the range because his role on Stargate Atlantis is so limited, but Jason Momoa is 6′5″ and 230. He has a brute stare, and a great smile for the ladies. Part Hawaiin/Cauc and raised in Iowa. He’s young at 29, but could easily pass for someone is his middle 30’s.

Celeste Says:

As an avid reader of Reacher novels, I would hate the books’ main character to be ruined by most of the no-talent actors suggested on this forum. Dwayne Johnson, Vin Diesel, Kevin Durand and Jason Statham are some of the worst actors in Hollywood. I would be seriously disappointed if Child allowed his favorite character be played by one of these lame oafs. Maybe Ray Stevenson, Josh Holloway or Hugh Jackman would work for this role as they fit the description most. Bana and Momoa don’t fit the Reacher description at all.

BILLY Says:

I don’t think you would need a great actor to play Jack Reacher. Can’t think of anyone that would win an academy award for that character. Ray Stevenson is a good package, but has baggage. A (3) film package would put him over 50 + I would luv to hear him shake his accent.

The reason no film is because the right guy hasn’t come along. Josh Holloway or Jackman are not imposing enough….even with lifts in their shoes. All the rest are cartoon characters and don’t have the charm needed for the ladies (yes, Jack is eye candi for most of the ladies).

Some actors that big have had a professional sports background, but Reacher is no “Roid Freak”, so Wrestling prospects are out. Maybe Tom Brady or Tony Romo can act? Momoa is a stetch because of his Island blood, but I still think you could lighten his hair and give him a good script and he could pull it off. I think he is producing his own film that he will star in and direct. Be interesting to see if he can really act with a good script.

Scott Says:

regarding my early comment, i am only 15, i wonder if you thinks that is distorting my veiw of who best fits reacher. i still stand by my earlier remark, eric bana would be the best

Charles Says:

I’m agreeing with Celeste about how bad (some) of those Hollywood actors are. I think Billy somehow thinks Ray Stevenson couldn’t shake his accent. There are many Hollywood actors who are actually British but you don’t recognize their accents or Americans who can easily pull off a British or Scottish accent. Don’t underestimate what vocal coaches can do! Or make up!
Eric Bana MIGHT be okay, it’s just he’s too pretty and lacks presence; plus, he’s not that great of an actor–kind of dull, actually. The pretty boy, Jason Amoa, is too young. Remember: Jack Reacher is NOT a college aged (or looks like it) kid.
I don’t have time to “search” for a match, but from what I’ve seen suggested here, Ray Stevenson, so far I’ve seen, is still the best choice. They’d just better decide QUICK, as Ray Stevenson IS aging! Maybe some of those younger guys will be old enough by the time those who decide make up their minds!

Geoff Says:

The only choice (depending on director) for me would be Dolph Lundgren, right height, age, build, type and has both payed miltary and was in the miltary. In real life has IQ of nearly 160 so is hands down the best choice to do Reacher justice.

Charles Says:

Dolph Lundgren meets all of the physical characteristics one would look for in Jack Reacher…BUT…he CAN’T ACT. Sorry.

Geoff Says:

That depends on your point of view. It could be said that some of the people in the list also cant act - it also depends on the director in order to be able to carry off what is required from the actors - To which I think Dolph would be given the chance to shine. - IMHO :o)

Charles Pruett Says:

Hmmm. Who knows? Maybe Dolph could muster some presence. I’ve just never seen him come across as convincing in any of his roles except as his first (known) role in Rocky: “You vill lose!”

tom Says:

I agree. Dolph would be perfect. Some say that his acting isn’t up to par. But I think they don’t have to be a strong actor to play Jack.
