INDIANA JONES Trailer

May 6th, 2008

Though I told myself I would not watch the final trailer for INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTALL SKULL out of fear of having any more of the film spoiled, but then it appeared before me when I went to go see IRON MAN (followed by THE DARK KNIGHT trailer no less. I pretty much had a geekgasm). I just couldn’t find the heart to close my eyes and plug my ears. I suppose I underestimated the tantalizing allure of seeing and hearing it in on a big screen. This weak mortal could not resist. Thankfully not much more was given away, and instead I had the pleasure of getting a sweet taste of what it’s going to be like when I’m sitting in theatres on May 22nd, trying to hold back my girlish screams of glee.

REEL News: Connery Appearing in INDIANA JONES

April 1st, 2008

Seems like everything is coming up Sean Connery of late. In addition to the recent news that Connery may be playing a Bond villain opposite Daniel Craig, an insider over on Ain’t It Cool has discovered that he will in fact be showing up in INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL film, returning as Indy’s dad. Though his character was rumored to be in the script, a while back he had the following to say: “I thought long and hard about it and if anything could have pulled me out of retirement it would have been an Indiana Jones film. I love working with Steven and George, and it goes without saying that it is an honor to have Harrison as my son. But in the end, retirement is just too damned much fun.” It would seem this was little more than an elaborate deflection on the part of all involved to get us off this trail. Though how long his screen time will be is still unclear, the insider claims that Jones Sr. will be in the early parts of the film when Indy needs some advice about his current adventure, and that his father even tags along for the less dangerous parts of it. Honestly, I couldn’t be more excited. I was always a little bitter Connery wouldn’t come out of retirement for this, even more so when I heard the recent news that he might do so for the Bond franchise. Sure, that series made him a star, but come on! Indiana Jones! I shall now humbly swallow my bitterness, and replace with utter, unrestrained glee.

What do you guys think? Excited for the return of Connery as Indy’s Dad? Think there’s too much crazy casting going on in this film now?

INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL Poster Revealed

March 10th, 2008

USA Today scored big-time and got the exclusive first-look at the final INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL poster. Aside from the fact that it’s gorgeous – to be expected from renowned poster artist Drew Struzan – we finally get a closer look at the crystal skull which is clearly not even remotely human looking. Is our favorite archeologist dealing with aliens after all? And an extremely grumpy looking Shia LaBeouf?

REEL News: Sabretooth, Uwe Boll, and PIRATES

March 6th, 2008

Liev Schreiber’s Sabretooth wins me over!
With the onslaught of casting news regarding X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE, the one I was most skeptical about was Schreiber playing Sabretooth. It’s not that he isn’t a fine actor (he is), it’s just that I absolutely could not picture him in the role whatsoever. I mean Wolverine’s long-time adversary is supposed to be a pretty bulky, buff, menacing looking guy. Liev Schreiber is not that. Until now. Just Jared posted a multitude of pictures featuring Schreiber all dressed up in costume here, and what can I say? He not only fits the role perfectly, he looks just like Sabretooth is supposed to. I still find myself wary of this film, largely because it seems like the casting got a little overboard, and they’re throwing in so many other mutants this might as well be X-MEN 4, but slowly I can feel the tiniest bit of excitement building within me.

REEL NEWS: INDIANA JONES gets the Cannes treatment

February 29th, 2008

After a few days of rumors, it’s now official. INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 18th, four days before its wide-release bow in North America on May 22nd. Please feel free to contact me if anyone wishes to send me donations to secure a plane and movie ticket, or if any promoters want to invite me for the premiere.

On a side note, is it just me, or does it seem like the Cannes Film Festival has gone from being a serious event, to a glorified marketing tool? I mean, in the past few years they’ve been host to decidedly un-artistic films such as TERMINATOR 3, THE MATRIX RELOADED, X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, and OCEAN’s 13 to name a few. It appears now that the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) really is now the premiere film festival of the world for truly artistic, dramatic films. Or let me put it this way: all of this year’s Best Picture Nominees (with the exception of THERE WILL BE BLOOD) premiered at TIFF. Sure, you could argue TIFF is also nothing more than a marketing tool since studios now know that the best way to create Oscar buzz for its films to get a good reception at TIFF, but somehow it just seems less … dirty.

REEL Trends: 3-D Filmmaking

February 28th, 2008

If someone had told me five years ago that 3-D would catch on the way it seems to be doing now, I’d probably have politely guffawed in their face. I mean, while I was growing up any film that was 3-D was usually extremely cheesy and low-budget science fiction or horror films, requiring you to park in a drive-in and wear cheap, goofy looking glasses. No studio would have dreamed to make a big-budget film in 3-D, and yet that’s exactly what’s happening now. I’m not sure which film you can blame for the resurrection of 3-D. On the one hand SPY KIDS 3D: GAME OVER, was a relatively high profile use of it, but I would argue it was really the surprise success of the 3-D IMAX version of THE POLAR EXPRESS that really cemented the trend, particularly for kids films. I mean, just have a look here to see how many films in the last few years had some 3-D elements to them.

It seems now that a studio will take any chance to make a film 3-D if they can. For better or worse the trend seems to be staying. The recent HANNAH MONTANA concert film proved very popular, and there are several 3-D projects currently in development as well. The announcement that prompted me to write about all this, actually, is that Disney is planning on making STEP UP 3-D.

Now, I’m not sure what is a bigger shock at this point for me. The fact that I didn’t realize until now that the STEP UP series even was Disney? (Well, technically, Touchstone, but that’s owned by Disney. I guess I never could be bothered enough with the film to even check who made it.) The fact that there was even a sequel in the first place? The fact that the sequel did well enough that it merited another one? Or the fact that the third installment for some reason needs to be in 3-D?

I don’t mean this to sound too catty, but who is actually going to watch STEP UP 2 in the theatres? What’s the demographic like? It must be tweens and teenagers, because that’s the only reason I can determine why Disney would feel the third installment of the series would be a good choice for 3-D, because they are the demographic that seems predominantly tempted by 3-D. Of course to some degree the property lends itself to the format, allowing viewers to see dance moves jump right out at them. The thing is, I just don’t see 3-D as anything appealing. You could tempt me with the new INDIANA JONES film being in 3-D, and I still wouldn’t see it because I see the format as nothing more than a novelty that – to me – detracts, not enhances, my experience of a film.

But to a much younger demographic, the novelty of 3-D is presumably what makes it so appealing to them. I’ll admit, a twelve-year old me would have been excited about a 3-D version of INDIANA JONES, because I would totally confuse the novel and gimmicky nature of 3-D as something that was “cool.” And I think that’s exactly why the studios are making so many films now with that technology. I doubt that they see the format as anything more than a novelty, but I also know that what they see more predominantly is the dollars that this particular gimmick can produce for them.

The INDIANA JONES Trailer: A Second Look

February 15th, 2008

indiana jones AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL pic

Now that some time has passed and you have been able to let your system process the INDIANA JONES trailer (or, if you’re like me, have taken the time to watch it twenty times) I thought now would be a good time to sink my teeth (or typing fingers) into it. Now, I’ll warn you. I’ll do my best to contain my unabashed, nerdy glee at this teaser trailer, but you are dealing with a guy who counts Raiders of the Lost Arc and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade as his top two favorite films of all time, and has seen them about fifty times. And that’s not cumulative. That’s each.

Now, let’s get the white elephant in the room shuffled out. A lot of people have been (inevitably) cracking wise about Harrison Ford looking old in all the photos that have been released in the past little while. Even the trailer itself pokes fun at the age factor (the “Not as easy as it used to be” quip). The thing is after watching the trailer and seeing Indy in action, I don’t even notice the age, and even if I did, I could care less, because, well, it’s Indiana Jones! Because honestly, the moment the famous Indiana Jones theme swelled up as he put his fedora on, I had goosebumps everywhere. Heck, when I heard his whip crack in the warehouse I got goosebumps. Who cares about his age when this trailer proves this film has everything I’ve come to expect from an Indy film: car chases, dusty cob-webbed temples, booby-traps, great one-liners (“Damn, I thought that was closer,” or “Part-time.”), and of course Indiana Jones getting beat-up, and beating others up in turn.

Not to sound like an old hardened veteran, but I just don’t get gleefully excited about films anymore. I don’t know if it’s an age thing, or if I know better by now. This trailer though? I feel like I did back when I was fifteen and every big blockbuster seemed like it would be the most exciting movie I would ever see in my life. This Indy, even if he may be old, makes me feel young again.
