Casting Call: CAPTAIN AMERICA

May 29th, 2008

With the announcement that a CAPTAIN AMERICA film is coming our way, and that Marvel has already a compiled a list of actors it wants to potentially play the star-spangled superhero (with Matthew McConaughey at the top of that list apparently), I decided to sit down with my friend, fellow comic book connoisseur, and co-editor of MONDOmagazine – the online magazine that gave this humble blogger his start – Miles Baker and talk about possible casting choices for the film.

NOTE: At the time this article was written Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige had not yet informed us the McConaughey rumors were false, nor confirmed that the film will be a period piece set in World War II.

REELaddict: So, Matthew McConaughey. I think though he has the physical build, I just see him as too much of a silly rogue who likes taking off his shirt and smoking weed. I don’t think he’s “serious” enough for the role. He always has that ironic glint in his eye in every movie he’s in.

I Can’t Wait For … MARGARET

Writer-director Kenneth Lonergan’s feature film YOU CAN COUNT ON ME (2000) remains one of my Top 10 favorite films of all time. I’ve seen it something like over twenty times now, own the published screenplay, and have one of its posters hanging over my bed. After the film was released I couldn’t wait to see what Kenneth Lonergan would write/direct next. So I waited. Then noticed he contributed to the screenplay to Martin Scorcese’s GANGS OF NEW YORK. But still no word on another project of his own. So I waited again. And waited. And … well, you get the idea.

I’d more or less given hope, fearing that Lonergan somehow felt burned by the film industry and returned to playwriting. However, a few weeks ago I was talking to someone about YOU CAN COUNT ON ME, and decided to use that as an excuse to check up on Lonergan for the first time in a while. So I ambled on over to his IMDB spread, and what should my unworthy eyes see? A new credit. Even better, a new film called MARGARET. Even better, it’s written and directed by him! Then I checked out the cast, and was elated to see he’s still able to draw a great set of actors, including Anna Paquin (starring in the title role), Matt Damon, Jean Reno, Allison Janney and up-and-comer Olivia Thirlby. Not just that, but several YOU CAN COUNT ON ME alumni are in it as well, including Matthew Broderick, Mark Ruffalo and Kieran Culkin. As if that weren’t enough, the film was also produced by heavy hitters Syndey Pollack and Anthony Minghella (both sadly lost to us recently) and Scott Rudin.

REEL News: Jason Bourne Returns

February 26th, 2008

Despite Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon insisting in the past that THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM would be their last venture in the franchise, it seems their resistance has broken down since Universal recently announced they have “landed” the pair for a fourth installment. Now, “landed” is usually vague Hollywood speak to indicate the two are at the table and probably hashing out a deal, so nothing is set in stone quiet yet. I can only imagine what kind of money Universal is going to be throwing their way, not only because the film was critically well received, and did well at the box-office ($227.5 million domestically so far), but it recently also won three Academy Awards. If they do go ahead with this, I hope they can manage to get Tony Gilroy back as screenwriter as well, because he’s a large part of what has made this franchise so successful. But with his career flourishing post-MICHAEL CLAYTON, it would be harder to do perhaps, and certainly more expensive (which I’m glad to hear for Gilroy). But then again if Sony can get extremely busy post-CRASH Paul Haggis back for the second Daniel Craig BOND film, then perhaps anything is possible.
