WANTED Trailer

March 7th, 2008

Now that the second trailer for WANTED has hit the net, I think I’m ready to come clean: I’m really looking forward to it. Yes, it looks like it’s going to be little more than excessive and indulgent displays of unbelievable over-the-top action with barely enough plot points to string them cohesively together. Yes, that curving bullet thing is not nearly as cool as the move thinks it is (I mean how many times did the trailer show it?), especially since THE MATRIX has made slow-motion bullet sequences pretty blasé at this point. Yes, it might even turn out to be bad.

But the thing is, sometimes I’m a sucker for just this kind of visceral action film. All that insanely choreographed car action stuff in the trailer, as ridiculous as it may be, entertains the heck out of me, even if the gun fights seem a bit lackluster based on the trailer. But having Angelina Jolie star in a role that is prime material for accentuating her hotness helps that a bit.

REEL Round-Up: Movie Trailer Edition

March 2nd, 2008

GET SMART
I loved GET SMART as a kid, so when I heard that particular television show was yet the latest to receive a feature film treatment, I was wary. Then I heard Steve Carell was cast in the role of bumbling, inept spy, Maxwell Smart, and small hopes were kindled, because if anyone was perfect for the role it was him. Now that the trailer has come out, I can even say I’m a little excited, because it looks like those involved totally nailed the silly spirit of the original show. It’s also the ideal vehicle for someone with Carell’s comedic talents, if the “I’m so happy” scene doesn’t prove it. Also I’m pretty sure I’ve never heard anyone in a film ever say “We’re not people who jam staples into other people’s heads,” let alone see someone actually do that. On a totally unrelated note, when did Anne Hathaway turn into such a hottie?

THE LOVE GURU
It’s been five years since Mike Myers last live-action performance (I don’t really count 2003’s THE CAT IN THE HAT, because he basically was an animated character in it), so you would think the guy would make a bit of an effort to bring something new to the table in his new film THE LOVE GURU. Instead, based on this trailer, we just get the same old Mike Myer jokes recycled. Again, there’s dance numbers, the border-line embarrassing comedic use of a little person, there’s a spin on the “Mole” spiel he did in AUSTIN POWERS: GOLDMEMBER, and your run of the mill penis jokes. Sure, there are some gems here (The “Then my Mom got a job” bit, for example), but it’s all just jokes we’ve seen him do too many times before. Actually, the funniest thing going in this trailer is – of all things – Justin Timberlake’s humorous Québécois impression.

As a Canadian though, I do have to chuckle at the fact that long-time Toronto Maple Leafs fan Mike Myers found a way for his team to actually be Stanley Cup contenders, even if it’s in a fictional world. Sure, a bit hard to believe, given the current state of the team, but no more unbelievable then Jessica Alba playing their general manager or Romany Malco playing their star player (seriously, he looks ridiculous in the Leafs uniform).

IRON MAN Trailer

February 29th, 2008

The last trailer for IRON MAN had me already pretty excited for the film, but Favreau & Co. just had to give us another trailer with enough little extra tid bits to have me counting down the days till the film comes out on May 2nd. If you’ve seen the last trailer, this one will have some familiar elements, but throw in some classic Robert Downey Jr. humor, a cute looking Gwyneth Paltrow (glad she’s starting to do movies again), more of the origin story and suit, as well as awesome action sequences and music, and you got yourself a blockbuster film worth looking forward to.

The INDIANA JONES Trailer: A Second Look

February 15th, 2008

indiana jones AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL pic

Now that some time has passed and you have been able to let your system process the INDIANA JONES trailer (or, if you’re like me, have taken the time to watch it twenty times) I thought now would be a good time to sink my teeth (or typing fingers) into it. Now, I’ll warn you. I’ll do my best to contain my unabashed, nerdy glee at this teaser trailer, but you are dealing with a guy who counts Raiders of the Lost Arc and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade as his top two favorite films of all time, and has seen them about fifty times. And that’s not cumulative. That’s each.

Now, let’s get the white elephant in the room shuffled out. A lot of people have been (inevitably) cracking wise about Harrison Ford looking old in all the photos that have been released in the past little while. Even the trailer itself pokes fun at the age factor (the “Not as easy as it used to be” quip). The thing is after watching the trailer and seeing Indy in action, I don’t even notice the age, and even if I did, I could care less, because, well, it’s Indiana Jones! Because honestly, the moment the famous Indiana Jones theme swelled up as he put his fedora on, I had goosebumps everywhere. Heck, when I heard his whip crack in the warehouse I got goosebumps. Who cares about his age when this trailer proves this film has everything I’ve come to expect from an Indy film: car chases, dusty cob-webbed temples, booby-traps, great one-liners (“Damn, I thought that was closer,” or “Part-time.”), and of course Indiana Jones getting beat-up, and beating others up in turn.

Not to sound like an old hardened veteran, but I just don’t get gleefully excited about films anymore. I don’t know if it’s an age thing, or if I know better by now. This trailer though? I feel like I did back when I was fifteen and every big blockbuster seemed like it would be the most exciting movie I would ever see in my life. This Indy, even if he may be old, makes me feel young again.
