You Be the Critic: HELLBOY II and JOURNEY TO THE CENTRE OF THE EARTH

July 14th, 2008

reel2.jpg

It’s that time again, folks, where I want to hear want to know what you guys thought about what you saw this weekend, whether it was HELLBOY II or the 3-D extravaganza that was JOURNEY TO THE CENTRE OF THE EARTH. The last few times I’ve done this comments were far and few between, so this time I want no excuses. It doesn’t matter if you’re a long time reader, or just passing through. I want tons of comments, even if it’s just something as simple as “It rocked/It sucked,” a basic grade/rating, or even the odd “This movie was as brilliant as you are Mr. TheREELaddict.”

When Lightning Strikes Twice: Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love When Two Hollywood Studios Make Similar Plotted Movies

July 11th, 2008

volcano.jpg

I love when every now and then Hollywood makes two similar themed films at the same time.

It doesn’t happen often, but every now and then you have a case where Hollywood studios or filmmakers not only begin developing similar projects, but somehow manage to not only go into production with those films at the same time, but also release them often in the same year. In 1993/94 we got WYATT EARP and TOMBSTONE. In 1997 we had DANTE’S PEAK and VOLCANO. In 1998 we got DEEP IMPACT and ARMAGEDDON, and in 2005 we got THE CAVE and THE DESCENT.

There are of course also other cases where similar projects in development were competing and one or both lost and never were made. A few examples … A while back Martin Scorsese, Baz Luhrmann, and Oliver Stone were all developing Alexander the Great films. Then there was Christopher Nolan’s Howard Hughes (to be played by Jim Carrey, apparently) project which lost to Scorsese’s. There are inevitably more, so please feel free to post ones I missed below.

Happy Independence Day!

July 4th, 2008

This REEL Addict wants to wish a happy Independence Day weekend to one and all of my American readers. Having spent many years in America, I have several fond memories of July 4th weekend, most of them involving me gorging myself on mega-action blockbusters, or on an insane amount of food. Sometimes both at the same time. It wasn’t pretty, but still good times and that’s exactly what I hope for all of you, no matter what you’re doing.

Before you feel left out, have no fear. Just as my fellow Canadians got a special Canada Day themed film list, so too will our neighbors to the south get one. It might be a little less nation centered, but it will be a distinctly July 4th related list. Stay tuned.

IN SEARCH OF A MIDNIGHT KISS Poster

July 2nd, 2008

in search of a midnight kiss

Thanks to the great guys over at Cinematical, I found out about this little gem of an upcoming film called IN SEARCH OF A MIDNIGHT KISS. If their words of encouragement weren’t enough, the trailer had me eagerly anticipating this film that seems to sport more than a few similarities with two of my favorite films: BEFORE SUNRISE and BEFORE SUNSET. Now Cinematical landed the exclusive first look at the IN SEARCH OF A MIDNIGHT KISS poster, which I have to share with you here because I want as many people as possible to check it out. I think this film is an indie classic making folks, and it hits theatres on August 1st. Mark your calendars for good old fashioned indie romance.

People actually like TITANIC?!

June 25th, 2008

Maybe I didn’t get the memo, but I thought by now it was generally accepted and understood that TITANIC is not a great movie. I’ll admit at the time I got swept up in the hype and had a good enough time watching it, but after I had a chance to see it again a few years later I was left embarrassed by the fact that I had ever been tricked into liking it. Aside from the still exciting sinking sequence (which remains a tour de force in itself), the rest of it is nothing less than overwrought and clichéd melodrama of the highest, silliest order. For some reason – and maybe this is my own arrogance – I had thought that most people felt the same way too, as they also had felt the drunken allure of the buzz and hype drift away with the years.

Yet recently not only did the AFI list it as their No. 6 choice for Top 10 Epics list, Entertainment Weekly put it in its No. 3 spot on their 100 New Movie Classics List. Am I missing something here? Am I out of touch? Can somebody help me out here? Am I the only one who thinks it’s not only unworthy of such acclaim, but even maybe a bad movie? If I am, what am I doing wrong here?

Does anyone actually want more SPIDER-MAN films?

June 24th, 2008

spiderman

Not that we have much choice. In the recent months we’ve not only heard that James Vanderbilt (ZODIAC, THE RUNDOWN) is working on two scripts so that SPIDER-MAN 4 and 5 could be shot together, but that SPIDER-MAN 4 (according to producer Laura Ziskin) has an official release date of May 2011. All that’s left to do now, really, is figure out the casting.

Yet regardless of Sony’s greedy ambitions (remember when we were promised we’d only get a trilogy and that would be that?), I would like to know if anyone out there genuinely WANTS more SPIDER-MAN movies. Yes, I imagine on some level everyone – including myself – would love more adventures from one of the best superheroes ever, and a franchise that has given us one of the best comic book movies to date(SPIDER-MAN 2). Then again, on some level a lot of INDIANA JONES fans probably wouldn’t have minded another adventure, and that didn’t quite turn out so well either.
