REEL News Update: Ridley Scott exploring BRAVE NEW WORLD?

June 6th, 2008

So yesterday I posted the news that Ridley Scott would be gracing us with another entry in the science fiction genre, but remained coy as to what the project might be, aside from hinting it’s a book he’s been trying to get for a long time. Well, the good fellows over at Rope of Silicon have put together some of the pieces, and it now seems that the project may very well be Aldous Huxley’s excellent dystopian novel BRAVE NEW WORLD. Though generally Huxley’s novel gets overshadowed by the more popular and mistakenly similar 1984 by George Orwell, I found it to be the better and more interesting novel. It’s really perfect material for the guy who gave us the equally effective dystopian BLADE RUNNER, and I can see why he’s been wanting to do it for so long. His passion for it, combined with the quality of the novel, have me very very excited if this proves to be truly the film Scott is wanting to do next.

REEL News: The Return of Ridley Scott

June 5th, 2008

After a 26 year absence from the genre he has blessed with two undeniable classic (BLADE RUNNER, ALIEN), the maniacally busy director is finally returning to science fiction, according to a recent interview with Eclipse Magazine. The coy British gentleman would not reveal what this science fiction project might be about, beyond saying indicating it’ll be based on a book he’s been trying to get for twenty years. He did at least suggest that the script might very well be done within the next month, and that this film will be his next project after the currently shooting NOTTINGHAM with Russell Crowe.

REEL News: Ridley Scott, the Busiest Director in Hollywood

April 17th, 2008

Ridley Scott must get really easily bored. Or someone has implanted a bomb in his head and made a SPEED like threat that if he isn’t working on at least three projects at the same time at all times, the bomb will explode. I’m not sure how else I can explain the man’s insane schedule of projects.

The man is currently in post-production on BODY OF LIES, on pre-production on NOTTINGHAM, and in production on BLOOD MERIDIAN. He’s also producing CHURCHILL AT WAR, TELL-TALE, CRACKS, WELCOME TO THE RILEYS, FACTOR X, and EMMA’s WAR. That’s only a sample. The man has 11 other in-development projects going on in addition to that. Now news comes that he’s attached himself to produce and direct an adaptation of Tom Epperson’s novel, THE KIND ONE. The film will star Casey Affleck, and is “set in 1930s Los Angeles, [centering] on an amnesiac who finds himself working for a mobster — a killer given the nickname “the Kind One” — and falling in love with the thug’s girlfriend.”
