REEL Roundup: Publicity Stills

Last week a number of highly anticipated films released new high quality production stills, so I thought I’d throw in a sort of “Greatest Hits” of the ones I thought stood out the most, including some from the QUANTUM OF SOLACE (which seem to reveal that the guy from the end of CASINO ROYALE gets a bit of a working over, and even Bond looks pretty beat up here), great iconic images from THE DARK KNIGHT, some romantic TWILIGHT moments, and a gorgeous image from WALL-E.

(Another) THE DARK KNIGHT Poster

“Look, Mom, it’s a bird, it’s a plane, its… uh … a marketing campaign in over-drive.”
I’m excited as the next guy about THE DARK KNIGHT, but is anyone else feeling maybe a little itty-bit inundated by the film’s extremely active marketing campaigns?

THE DARK KNIGHT Poster

Does anyone else find this new THE DARK KNIGHT poster … unsettling? For some reason to me it uncomfortably evokes the 9/11 imagery of the smoke generated by the World Trade Center towers crumbling. The tagline doesn’t help matters either, both because it has the word “world” in it, and because it seems like the exact message that got conveyed to most of us shocked by the events of that day. I’ll concede perhaps I’m being over-sensitive, but that’s the immediate impression I got looking at this thing.

But, if I move past all that, and turn into a movie geek again, I have to say the poster is pretty cool. The iconic Batman pose is great. I love the blue filtering hues that evoke an oppressive bleakness. The burning Batman logo in the building is a creative way of highlighting it. And the chaos generated in the poster – as well as the tagline – perfectly captures the unpredictable and manic anarchy the Joker stands for.
