Introducing the Addicts: Souf Jalili
January 6th, 2009
Souf Jalili remembers the summer of 2001 as the defining period in his career as an avid movie watcher, when he transitioned from watching mindless action blockbusters and Jim Carrey flicks to more serious fare and developed a passion for foreign and avant-garde cinema (all thanks to a gifted membership to an indie video store).
He is a big fan of classics, foreign films, documentaries and British cinema with 21 GRAMS, AMORES PERROS, OLDBOY, 2046, BRIEF ENCOUNTER, SYRIANNA, ALL ABOUT EVE, NORTH BY NORTHWEST, THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS and THE NEW WORLD being some of his absolute favourites. Wes Anderson, Terrence Mallick, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Wong-Kar-Wai and Chan-wook Park are his favourite directors and he could even watch them shoot a trip to the grocery store. Benicio Del Toro, Johnny Depp, Naomi Watts and Julianne Moore are his favourite actors and ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST was the first DVD he ever bought,
Besides, movies, Souf is also very passionate about art and theatre and is a regular volunteer at various cultural organizations and festivals in Toronto. He recalls meeting Jessica Alba and telling off Brian De Palma at a festival (didn’t realize who he was) as two of the most surreal moments of his life, and his 2009 New Year’s resolution is to work his way towards watching all of the films on the IMDB Top 250 list and the AFI list and to also send in more contributions to theREELaddict.com.
