REEL News: Green Arrow is SUPER(MAX)

May 22nd, 2008

The good folks over at Latino Review got their hands on a script for a film I didn’t even know was in development at this point. The movie is apparently called SUPERMAX. Now, even though the title is dumb (seriously, that sounds like a name for an ultra-absorbent maxi-pad), what it’s a title for is actually pretty cool: a Green Arrow movie. For those of you not familiar with the DC comics character, he’s basically Batman (rich, billionaire playboy) via Robin Hood, as he’s almost super-humanly accurate with a bow and arrow and borderline communist in his beliefs. What’s interesting is that this film is going to depart from traditional origin films. Apparently we’ll get his origins really quickly in the first act, and then he gets set-up and thrown into a maximum security prison full of super villains (and there are plenty who makes cameos, including The Joker, Lex Luthor, The Riddler, and some B and C level ones too). So essentially we’re getting a Green Arrow prison break movie. Certainly that’s a departure from your usual superhero film formula, but I think that’s exactly what makes it so appealing. Now whether WB will approve it or not remains to be seen. After all, as Miles – my friend and co-editor of MONDOmagazine – pointed out, this is also the same studio that let Joss Whedon, probably the most ideal candidate to make a WONDER WOMAN film, get away.

If you want more details about SUPERMAX (including learning how the prison apparently magically reconfigures itself every night to make escaping that much harder), you can check out the review of the script over at Latino Review.
