REEL NEWS: INDIANA JONES gets the Cannes treatment

February 29th, 2008

After a few days of rumors, it’s now official. INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 18th, four days before its wide-release bow in North America on May 22nd. Please feel free to contact me if anyone wishes to send me donations to secure a plane and movie ticket, or if any promoters want to invite me for the premiere.

On a side note, is it just me, or does it seem like the Cannes Film Festival has gone from being a serious event, to a glorified marketing tool? I mean, in the past few years they’ve been host to decidedly un-artistic films such as TERMINATOR 3, THE MATRIX RELOADED, X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, and OCEAN’s 13 to name a few. It appears now that the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) really is now the premiere film festival of the world for truly artistic, dramatic films. Or let me put it this way: all of this year’s Best Picture Nominees (with the exception of THERE WILL BE BLOOD) premiered at TIFF. Sure, you could argue TIFF is also nothing more than a marketing tool since studios now know that the best way to create Oscar buzz for its films to get a good reception at TIFF, but somehow it just seems less … dirty.
