REEL News: Jack Ryan, Jackie Chan and Jet Li, and JUSTICE LEAGUE

 Jack Ryan Returns

Not satisfied with having spear-headed one successful franchise (SPIDER-MAN), Sam Raimi  is in negotiations with Paramount Pictures to revive the Jack Ryan franchise, inspired by the Tom Clancy’s novels. Previous installments included THE HUNT FOR THE RED OCTOBER (1990) with Alec Baldwin playing the character, PATRIOT GAMES (1992) and CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER (1994), featuring Harrison Ford in the role, and THE SUM OF ALL FEARS (2002) with Ben Affleck. However, according to Variety, the intention this time around is to not only feature a younger, more in-training Jack Ryan, but to possibly set the films in the present. It hasn’t been made clear whether new films would be based on existing Clancy novels, or would be original stories created specifically for the films. Regardless, it’s great to see Raimi branching out finally from the SPIDER-MAN films, and if all goes according to plan - and to how Paramount wants it - we may see another Ryan installment as soon as 2010.

Jackie Chan versus Jet Li: Part Two

Good news for martial art fans. Apparently Jackie Chan and Jet Li enjoyed working together so much on the upcoming THE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM (if not working on that specific film), they want to work together again as quickly as possible. It’s especially good news because - honestly - THE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM doesn’t look that great, and I would much rather see the two actors together in a non-Hollywood film. If you’re going to do a Jet Li and Jackie Chan movie, you have to do it right, i.e the way they want to do it. That apparently would involve filming a script they have been loosely working on for fifteen years. Hey, I say give them whatever they want, let them film whatever they want, because if anyone knows what can bring out the best in them it’s a) the actors themselves, and b) their national industries, not Hollywood who has managed to only dilute both of their great martial arts talents.

Even the Justice League would have thrown in the towel at this point…

In the most recent set-back for the proposed George Miller directed JUSTICE LEAGUE film, it looks like the Australian government is dragging their feet in regards to giving the production the tax rebate it would need to get made. Honestly, I think the studio should just indulge in a little superstition and begin to wonder whether this project isn’t jinxed. This is a lot of trouble to go through for a project that - except for the studio itself - most don’t think is a great idea to begin with. As a moderate comic book fan myself, I honestly would love to see this project to die (along with the rumored AVENGERS one too).
