Well, here we are ladies and gentleman. A full week has gone by, and if you didn’t know before what films qualified as the best of 2008, you sure do now. Thanks to all of our contributors you’ve got a wide range of different opinions, and - even better - a lot of films to agree and disagree on, or just track down and see.Despite how amazingly diverse and eclectic everybody’s lists were though, there were some consistencies. Enough, anyway, for … wait for it… another list! Please, please, stifle your enthusiasm, your cubicle neighbors are starting to notice your girlish squeals and spastic dancing.

Now that you have yourself under control, I am happy to bring you THE BEST OF THE BEST OF 2008 List! For those of you without PhDs in math, the following may be hard to make sense of, but here are the complex mathematical processes I used to determine this list.

What I did was, I assigned each number on a list a particular number. Movies that got a No. 1 slot, received 10 points. Movies that got a No. 2 slot, received 9 points. And so on. At the end, the movie with the most mentions on multiple lists, and with the most accumulated points, was at the top of the heap and then I filled in the rest of this list from there.

So, without further ado, I present to you: THE BEST OF THE BEST OF 2008 List, according to our fantastic writers and some fancy schmancy math:

10. I’VE LOVED YOU SO LONG (6 points)

9. DOUBT (7 points)

8. TROUBLE THE WATER (10 points)

7. IN BRUGES (12 points)

6. VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA (15 points)

5. WALL-E (15 points)

4. RACHEL GETTING MARRIED (18 points)

3. LET THE RIGHT ONE IN (19 points)

2. THE WRESTLER (29 points)

1. SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE (31 points)

A consolidated list is a great idea. I love the mathematical way of determining it.

Unfortunately, Wall-E still ends up being the only movie on the list I’ve seen. Out of the other nine: one I’m wanting to see slightly more than I did originally, one I might see if I get in more of an “Oscar mood” later, two I *might* rent on video, two I’ve never heard of, and the other three I just don’t want to see.

Any chance we could see numbers 11-20, or at least 11-15?

Todd W - Out of curiosity, what are the specific films that break down into your “want to see, not see, rent, etc” categories?

As for the consolidated list, the credit for that ideas goes to one of our new writers Souf Jalili who suggested doing it. It being a great idea, how could I not do it?

In terms of the rest of the list though, I can see what I can do. It would be a bit weird though, since - perfectly enough - there were only 10 films on all our lists that overlapped.

Todd W in NC Says:

Warming Up To: Slumdog Millionaire

If More in the Oscar Mood: The Wrestler

Might Rent: In Bruges and V.C. Barcelona

Never Heard Of: I’ve Loved You So Long, Trouble in the Water

No Interest:
- Doubt
- Rachel Getting Married
- Let the Right One In

I have to admit though, my movie-watching was down quite a bit last year, so I didn’t see a huge quantity nor variety of movies. My top 3 were all summer blockbusters: The Dark Knight, Iron Man, and Wall-E. Everything else was either good-but-not-excellent, mediocre, or forgettable. In my defense, I do want to see more “thinking” kind of movies. I just haven’t caught up yet.

In Bruges is so good. You should really see it.
