Top 10 Anticipated Summer Movies

June 8th, 2008

Editor’s Note: Our Top 10 Anticipated Summer Movies was actually written in April, but posted late due to theTVaddict’s unfortunate addiction to TV!

Honorable Mentions: THE HAPPENING, THE INCREDIBLE HULK,

Guilty Pleasures: MAMMA MIA!, SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELLING PANTS 2, THE ACCIDENTAL HUSBAND , WANTED, THE MUMMY: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR

10. GET SMART (June 20th)
I’ll concede that there’s a pretty substantial chance that GET SMART might not end up being very good. The thing is I grew up loving the TV show (when I lived in Germany the only English-language channel we got was one that played older shows like “Bewitched,” “I Dream of Jennie,” etc), and Steve Carell is ideally suited for the role – both in terms of appearance and humor. I also never cease to enjoy watching The Rock poking fun at himself, nor seeing Anne Hathaway get increasingly more attractive and diverse with her roles.

9. STEP BROTHERS (July 25th)
The interactions between Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly in TALLEDGA NIGHTS were the highlight of the film for me, and the notion of pitting them together as boy-men stepbrothers is nothing short of comedic gold. I mean, I can’t remember the last time I laughed so much during a trailer. The “Did we just become best friends?!” line cracks me up every time. It’s good too to see that Will Ferrell is taking a role that is also ideally suited for his brand of humor (and isn’t making fun of a sport/career).

8. TROPIC THUNDER (August 15th)
Robert Downey Jr. playing an over-the-top method actor playing an African American solider? That’s all I pretty much need right there. But sure, having Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Jay Baruchel, Nick Nolte and a handful of cameos doesn’t hurt either, nor does the film’s motivation to spoof war films like APOCALYPSE NOW and the way they attempted to immerse their actors in the war experience.

7. HELLBOY 2 (July 11th)
I’m going to go ahead and confess that I wasn’t as enamored with HELLBOY as others were, but I liked it enough certainly to look forward to a sequel, especially when it looks like Guillermo Del Toro has seriously upped the artistic ante. Based on the trailers, this movie looks like it’s just bursting with elaborate creature and set designs, and you can never go wrong with the great sarcastic deliveries of Ron Pearlman as Hellboy.

6. THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: PRINCE CASPIAN (May 16th)
PRINCE CASPIAN was probably my second favorite installment of the Narnia series when I was a kid, and I was a big fan of the last CHRONICLES OF NARTNA film installment (I’m actually surprised that the film has a fair amount of detractors), so I’m really looking forward to this, even if it looks surprisingly dark and violent for a supposed family film. Doesn’t really affect me, but still.

5. THE X-FILES: I WANT TO BELIEVE (July 25th)
Though I know a lot of people dug the alien mythology on “The X-Files” when it was on the air, I was always a much bigger fan of the stand-alone monster episodes, so I’m pretty happy that this X-FILES film will stay away from the little green men. Of course I’m also excited to see Mulder and Scully tackle the paranormal again, find out what they’ve been up in the mean time, and see Mulder once again wrestle with his beliefs (something that was always interestingly handled on the show). This X-Phile can’t wait.

4. HANCOCK (July 2nd)
Given that I didn’t even really want to see this about a month ago, I was shocked to find HANCOCK placed so highly on my list. But a series of ever-improving trailers have sold me on the appeal of seeing a superhero start out an anti-hero bum, who then must learn to become a functioning member of society, and well, a better person. You also can’t argue with the cast (Will Smith, Charlize Theron, Jason Bateman), nor the man behind the camera (Peter Berg, THE KINGDOM, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, THE RUNDOWN).

3. THE DARK KNIGHT (July 18th)
BATMAN BEGINS remains one of the best superhero movies to date, and given that sequels to comic book movies are often better (largely because the origin story is over and done with) I don’t need to speculate as to whether this is going to be awesome, but rather what degree of awesomeness it will demonstrate. With the same crew back again, the eerie Heath Ledger as The Joker (seriously, I can barely tell it’s Ledger, both because of the make-up, and the performance), and Aaron Eckhart as Two-Face, how could I feel any other way?

2. WALL-E (June 27th)
Who would have thought a service robot from the future would be able to vanquish the Batman, but when said robot is as utterly adorable as WALL-E, and the film is made by Pixar, THE DARK KNIGHT really stands absolutely no chance. I’d sell my cat if this turns out to be nothing short of amazing.

1. INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL (May 22nd)
If you have been following this site even remotely you should by now know of my utter devotion to the INDIANA JONES films, so the fact this fourth is at the top of my list should come as a surprise to no one.
