You Be The Critic: TWILIGHT

November 24th, 2008

twilight cast

In the midst of beginning preparations for my upcoming move, I’m still in the process of writing my review of TWILIGHT for later today. In the mean time, given that the film hauled in an impressive $70.5 million at the box office this weekend, I’d say there’s a good chance a fair amount of you saw it.

So, what did you think? If you were a fan of the novel/series, how did the movie fair in comparison? If you saw the movie without ever having read a page of the novel/series, what did you think without all those pesky preconceived notions and expectations?

Being a HUGE fan of the series, I was a little disappointed in the movie. It was good, don’t get me wrong, but there was a bit of overacting (did anyone see Edwards face when he first smelled Bella??) and I was upset about the meadow part… but overall it was a good movie. I thought that the rest of the Cullens were dead on and so were Bella’s friends at school. It was an alright adaptation of the story. I thought that they were missing alot of the build in Edward and Bellas relationship. There wasn’t a whole lot of tension for me in the movie, which is what makes the books so good.

So in my opinion it was good, and i will probably see it again, just because it is Twilight!!!

I saw Twilight this weekend and I loved it. It was different from the book at times, but that didn’t really bother me (in fact, there were times I found myself wishing that the parts that were different in the movie were part of the book, I enjoyed them so much!). I thought they did a great job conveying the story, even while still changing a few things around. Granted, it’s been a few months since I read the books so it wasn’t super fresh in my mind - and I think that helped since I wasn’t comparing every little thing. I thought Rob Pattinson was the perfect Edward, and I liked Kristen Stewart as Bella as well. I thought she did a great job, and I thought the two of them had great chemistry. The baseball scene was very entertaining, and I loved the ballet studio scene as well. I am definitely looking forward to the next movie, and I hope they eventually make all of the novels into films.

Because my friend is a crazy fan, I read the books and agreed to go with her to see the movie. In the end, I started to enjoy the hype and look forward to the craziness. When I first read the books, the feminist in me was troubled. Then I realized my jaded self needed to see them for what they are, enjoyable over indulgent romance. And really, what is wrong with that. “Love Actually” is one of my favorite movies and this series is made in the same vane. The feminist in me objected to Edwards’s abusive slant and Bella’s personally identity being so tied to a boyfriend. Then I realized that it was nice that there was such an old-fashioned romance going on. I think things like Gossip Girl are worse influences to young girls. This is a story that gets how important the first kiss is.

The movie was fun and I loved the fact the whole theatre screamed when Edward first appeared. There were moments when groups of young girls giggled and shrieked in delight. Movies are an obsession with me and I realize this movie is not aiming for aesthetic mastery. This movie is merely for entertainment and it totally succeeded at that. Hardwicke did a wonderful job at capturing the heart of the books and yet making it visually accessible. I really liked the low-key special effects and action scenes. I would be afraid if given more money on the second movie that they over due it. The chemistry was perfect between Bella and Edward. In addition, several of the extended characters were great; Peter Facinelli and Ashley Greene were wonderful. Billy Burke as Charlie totally stole some scenes. For me, in the end, the fact that Hollywood got a big in your face if you do not think woman count smack was very satisfying.

So, I’m a huge fan of the books and was totally looking forward to seeing the movie. I gotta say I really enjoyed it! I was actually really afraid that I’d be disappointed but I loved it and definitely would recommend it to others. I think that sure there were some things that they could of done better but they got the casting down and the chemistry between the actors was great. There are always going to be things that don’t translate as well from novel to screen, like seeing Edward Dazzle so not what I pictured but then there was the Cullen’s entrance in to the cafeteria so what i pictured, you just can’t make everyone happy, but over-all it was great . I figure that NEW MOON will be even better now that they’ll have a bigger budget. Can’t wait to see it.

Basically, I think Catherine Hardwicke made some very poor choices and the rest of the series needs a new director. PLEASE.

I read all 4 books in one week, just to see what the hype was all about. I became obsessed immediately. I’m almost 31 years old but felt like I was 17 all over again. I had to see the movie right away …and after leaving, I was fairly disappointed. I felt like the movie lacked character development - a big part of the books. I needed to see the chemistry between Bella and Edward to really feel the way I felt when reading the books. It wasn’t there. Don’t get me wrong, there were definitely some spot on scenes (i.e. baseball, the van scene, prom)…those were all as I had pictured. But the scene in the lunchroom where she talks about how he dazzles her…I was so bummed that wasn’t in the movie. I needed to know why they felt so strongly about each other.
Oh well, maybe w/ some more money and some better understanding of the characters by Kristen and Rob - we’ll see a better #2. For some reason though, I’m dying to see the movie again…must be that Rob Pattinson - he’s a looker!
